Broncos trade for Craig Morton

Broncos QB Craig Morton
Craig Morton tries to quiet the crowd during a game early in the 1977 season.

Denver sends QB Steve Ramsey and future considerations to the Giants in exchange for Craig Morton, who ends up winning the starting job and guiding the Broncos to the 1977 AFC championship.

Ramsey had struggled in 1976 and been booed by fans. Morton was acquired “to give us some stability” while Norris Weese and Craig Penrose developed, GM Fred Gehrke said at the time. “We think Craig Penrose and Norris Weese have fine futures with the Broncos, and that Morton will help bring one or both along to an ultimate starting job.” Of course, Morton would turn out to be much more than just a placeholder.
